Reflexology is a method of using the thumb and fingers on reflex areas on the feet and hands that correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. The feet/hands act as a mini-map or mirror of the whole body’s anatomy.

History of Foot Massage
Foot massage is shown on pictures on the wall of the tomb of Ankhmahor in Egypt from around 2330 BC. Native Americans were also using foot treatment for maintaining well being. This method is also known in China for over 5 000 years. In the early twentieth century the American Dr. William Fitzgerald divided the body into ten longitudinal zones. Everything in each zone is connected. So pressure on the toe at one end will affect the head at the other end. Dr Edwin Bowers, Dr Joseph Riley and his wife Elizabeth Ann also played a significant part in developing foot massage. In the 1930s Eunice Ingham became known as the “mother” of reflexology. She passed her knowledge to Doreen Bayly who set up the Bayly School of Reflexology in Britain in 1966.
Benefits of reflexology:
It has a deeply relaxing effect, helping to relieve stress and tension (75% of disease is estimated to be stress related)
Improves blood circulation, which increases the efficiency of all organs and cells, by good supply of oxygen and nutrients circulated in the blood
Helps release trapped nerves and improves neural efficiency; reflexology stimulates around 7 000 nerves
Improves waste removal and elimination
Activates the body’s self healing mechanisms
MATERNITY REFLEXOLOGY
Qualified therapist can offer very safe treatment to pregnant women in any stage of pregnancy. Endocrine balance and Lymphatic technique are just some of the techniques used to ease pregnancy symptoms such as headaches, oedema or morning sickness. I would recommend this treatment to all pregnant women as it helps to maintain balance and harmony during rapidly changing conditions of pregnancy.
PRECONCEPTION
It takes two to tango! Ideally both parents should be included in preconceptual care to provide healthy sperm and ova and be mentally and spiritually prepared for surprises.
PREGNANCY
Helps: Morning sickness, fatigue, breast tenderness, heartburn, headaches, mood swings, anxiety, leg cramps...
BIRTH (From week 40 only)
Reflexology priming technique is strongly stimulating, working only if the body is ready. Previous reflexology treatments are advisable. Helps the mother prepare for birth.
POSTPARTUM
Reflexology helps naturally balance, harmonise, and restore the body, mind and spirit to a non-pregnant state.
Contraindications to the treatment:
DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT), IVF, PRE-ECLAMPSIA
DVT
DVT is a blood clot that forms inside a vein (usually in the calf). It may block the blood flow and if a fragment detaches and travels to another part of the body it may cause an embolus e.g. pulmonary embolus.
Signs and symptoms of DVT: Pain, swelling, heat, redness
As reflexology increases the vitality of the vascular system, there is a possibility that the thrombosis may move with dire consequences.
